Website Questions
1.
Who owns and operates this site?
This site is
owned and operated by Mike Braithwaite, Sherman E. Burroughs High
School Class of 83.
2. When
was it created and why?
In July 2002
I decided to create a website for our class, the Class of 1983.
I wanted to create a site where not only fellow 83 classmates could
re-connect, but also friends from other classes such as the Sherman
E. Burroughs High School Class of 1981
Sherman E. Burroughs High School Class of 1982
Sherman E. Burroughs High School Class of 1984
Sherman E. Burroughs High School Class of 1985
and many others. There will be a "Friends of 83"
Guestbook added to the site very soon where other non-83 class members
can post family pictures, etc. and communicate with their friends
in the Class of 83.
I also wanted to help promote our 20th Reunion. I noticed that other
classes created nice websites for their reunions, but then pulled
the plug on them after they were over. I wanted to create a site
that would always be online, one that looked professional and permanent,
and that didn't have annoying ads, pop-ups, and cheesy, ugly graphics,
etc. I was willing to put the time into it, so I decided to give
it a try.
3. How long
will it exist?
Indefinitely.
4.
How much does it cost per year to keep it going?
Right now,
it's only about $96 per year, but as it grows it could eventually
get up to $170 per year. There were a few start-up costs such as
host account installation, a java applet license, design software,
and custom php programming help for the guestbook. Fortunately,
I had already purchased the design software in designing my first
website.
5. Do you
accept donations?
Right now the
cost isn't a big deal to me, so I'm not taking donations. I just
consider it a gift to my class.
6. Are you
open to suggestions?
Yes, please
let me know if you'd like to see something new or have some constructive
criticism.
7.
The opening page water effect doesn't show up, and a few of the
other pages such as the News and Links pages don't completely work.
What's up with that?
The older browsers
such as Netscape 4, particularly in Mac's, don't recognize java
applets or Iframes which exist in some areas of the site. This site
was built primarilly for Internet Explorer 5 and Netscape 5 on up.
Some of the newer browsers like Opera should also work fine. If
you have any version of Netscape 4, then I invite you to leave 1995
and step into the future by updating your flippin browser!!
8.
Why are the pages downloading so slow?
If you don't
at least have a good 56k modem, you are going to be waiting years
for pages, photos, etc. to download. This site was designed for
broadband. High quality images, pages, etc. require it, and there's
just no other way around it. Sorry.
